Adelaide farewells culinary icon Tony Sanso, aged 87

South Australia’s food scene is mourning the loss of one of its greats, with celebrated restaurateur Tony Sanso passing away at age 87 on June 18.

Known for bringing the flavours of Florence to Adelaide, Sanso made a name for himself internationally before settling in South Australia in 1964.

His son Terence confirmed the news of his father’s passing on social media, writing: “It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of my dear father Eugenio Antonio Sanso, (or) Tony to his friends.

“His diligence and hard work will be remembered forever and he will be sadly missed by his wife Zeny, his youngest son Eugene and his grandchildren.”

Before migrating, Sanso cooked for stars including Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren and Bob Hope during stints at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris and The Savoy in London.

In Australia, he built an impressive culinary legacy, establishing a string of successful venues such as The Old Mill in Hahndorf, The Stable in Bridgewater, The Gawler Mill, Villa Sanso, Chianti Classico, Tony’s Bistro and Tony’s Tuscan Inn. His final venture, Osteria Sanso at Kanmantoo, marked his retirement after selling the business at age 84.

A spokesperson for Osteria Sanso paid tribute to his enduring influence.

“Tony had a burning passion for food and people, spending his life bringing his unique flavours of Italian food to the local community. A man who will be dearly missed by many,” the spokesperson said.

Tributes have flowed from former colleagues, diners and friends, many recalling warm memories, heartfelt meals and decades-old friendships.

“‘Cammina con gli angeli, uomo bello’ – Walk with the angels, handsome man”, one said.

“Such an Adelaide culinary icon over many years and venues,” another tribute added.
