Students learn and support industry

More than 140 William Angliss Institute students and staff helped work alongside the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF) to provide events, cookery and food and beverage support for the World’s Longest Lunch and the HEAT Homeless Longest Lunch events.

The World’s Longest Lunch was attended by more than 1,600 attendees who enjoyed the three-course menu designed by Antonio Carluccio and brought to life by Peter Rowland Catering.

The decadent Italian feast was inspired by Carluccio's new cookbook, Vegetables, and was served at the record 600-metre-long table on Carlton's Lygon Street.

William Angliss Institute has a long-standing relationship with MFWF with students gaining hands on, valuable experience in this major event.

Associate Director VET Stuart Walsh said this real-world experience is a wonderful addition to the students’ on-campus simulated training environments.

“In keeping with our specialist centre status, this type of active engagement with industry at such a large scale event is such an invaluable experience for our students.”

On the same day more than 60 students from William Angliss Institute’s Youth Learning department joined Hospitality Employment and Training (HEAT) students with Executive Chef Arnold Greiner to serve a three course lunch to 150 homeless members of the community at Luna Park.

The HEAT Homeless Longest Lunch is an event for people affected by homelessness and, for its tenth year, members of the community were encouraged to shout someone lunch. Since 2009 over 1,500 members of the homeless community have dined at HEAT.

The three course meal was designed by HEAT’s Patron, Guy Grossi and HEAT students helped prepare, cook and service the event, providing them with industry experience as part of their Certificate II in Hospitality.

HEAT is a pre-employment training program administered by St Kilda Youth Service and William Angliss Institute, in partnership with Inner Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network, City of Port Phillip, Victoria Police and Republica St Kilda Beach.

The program is a 12 week hospitality training course for young people aged 16-25 years who live in or close to the City of Port Phillip, who are unemployed or disengaged from mainstream education, and who may be experiencing personal problems. The programs are at no cost to participants.

William Angliss Institute is an integral part of the HEAT program from being part of the steering committee, to providing trainers, equipment and venues. The students learn vital skills to empower them to engage in customer service and the hospitality industry which is one of Australia’s fastest growing industries.

William Angliss Institute Manager, Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Cary Warren said, “We help these young people develop hospitality skills so they can get either full or part time employment, plus we work with them to help develop life skills and build self-esteem to improve all aspects of their lives.

“Having the opportunity to work on a big event like this which gives back to the community provides our students with the chance to practice their skills and build confidence for the workplace.”

The program is delivered in a supporting learning environment, using an applied learning principle, with a strong emphasis on welfare and career guidance. Participants are assisted to plan and work towards their personal, educational, further training and/or employment goals.

As Australia's largest hospitality training provider, students studying at the Institute can gain the skills and knowledge that will allow them entry into Melbourne's world class hotel and bar industry, and setting them up for supervisory and leadership positions internationally.

In addition to many short courses and industry training options, the Institute offers hospitality studies from a Certificate II through to degree level and for those interested in a career in hotel management, Angliss International Hotel School offers a Diploma of Hospitality Management with a specialised hotel management focus.
