Logan pub shooting leaves woman in critical condition
A drive-by shooting outside Fitzys pub in Loganholme, south of Brisbane, has left one woman in a critical condition and three men seriously injured.
Police were called to the Bryants Road venue during a boxing event on Saturday night, after reports of shots fired from a vehicle. Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said initial investigations indicated the shots came from the passenger window of a car at a drop-off area during an intermission in the Logan City Titles event.
A silver Mitsubishi stopped close to people standing outside and fired multiple shots, hitting four of them. The injured are:
-
A 19-year-old Jimboomba woman, who has gunshot wounds to her neck and head and remains critical after surgery.
-
A 38-year-old Browns Plains man, who has gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arm and is serious but stable after surgery.
-
A 37-year-old Salisbury man and a 27-year-old Cornubia man, who both have abdominal gunshot wounds and are stable after surgery.
Police believe the 19-year-old woman was an innocent bystander. They do not believe there is any further threat to the public.
“This is a horrific event in a public space where adults and children were simply trying to enjoy a sporting event,” Galpin said.
“This incident is clearly not acceptable, we will not tolerate it, and we are applying all our resources to identifying those involved.”
CCTV and witness accounts identified two men in the vehicle wearing balaclavas and gloves. The car left the car park and was found burnt out 20 minutes later, at 8:35pm, on Maloney Road at Waterford West. Police believe a second car collected its occupants and that a person may have been left injured or burnt. Later that night, a dual-cab ute was set alight on Beenleigh Beaudesert Road at Tamborine, and a crime scene was declared there. Investigators are trying to establish whether the two incidents are linked, and both vehicles will undergo forensic examination.
Police are looking for at least three people and are appealing to the community for information.
Galpin said there appeared to be a level of “pre-planning”, but it was “premature” to speculate on any involvement of gang members or organised crime.
Political and community response
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said the state would respond with “sorrow, anger, with a resolve to want to get to the bottom of it”.
“It’s just completely unacceptable that people on a night out at a pub doing something as Queenslander as you can possibly find can be caught and find themselves as collateral damage in such a horrendous, horrendous crime,” Crisafulli said.
According to Logan Mayor Jon Raven, event organisers from SHDW Boxing Gym were devastated.
“They go out of their way to help young people use boxing to get back on track and have some positive role models,” Raven said.
Logan City Titles said in a statement that the team was “praying for full recoveries”.
