The Beaconsfield Hotel could reopen 20 years after death of cricket legend

The pub where Australian cricket legend David Hookes was killed with a coward punch could reopen 20 years after closing its doors.

The Beaconsfield Hotel was shut in 2004 after Hookes died following an altercation with a bouncer.

The pub’s owner has now sought permission from Port Phillip Council to reopen, with the application currently being assessed.

The local beachside community will be asked for its feedback.

“The applicant is seeking to use the property as a bar, to repaint the facade and requesting car park dispensation,” Port Phillip Council Mayor Heather Cunsolo told The herald Sun.

“The application material is being updated and will be made public when it’s ready to be advertised later this month.”

Staff at the hotel received death threats after the incident, while bricks were thrown through the window.

Hookes was enjoying drinks after a one-day match between Victoria and South Australia.

The 48-year-old died after an argument bouncer Zdravko Micevic, who was charged with manslaughter but found not guilty.

The jury could not find that the punch was not related to self-defence.
