Pubs chip in to help community

South Australian pubs have rallied behind the annual Chip In For Mary Potter charity golf day, an event that raises sorely needed money to help with palliative care.

The golf day is organised by the Mary Potter Foundation.

Pubs getting behind the event include the Hurley Group’s Arkaba Hotel and Martin Palmer’s Palmer Hotel Group.

And then there’s the rest of the industry. Brewers Coopers, CUB and West End are supporting it as are the big winemakers Wicks Estate Wines, Yalumba and Treasury Wines. Then there’s the hospitality businesses like Coca Cola Amatil, Big Screen Video, PFD Food Services, Sip ‘n Save, John Reuther Cabinetmakers and Fresh Produce Direct.

As part of the event, sponsors have been asked donate prizes and experiences that would be up for “sale” in silent auctions. And they have chipped in too. Past examples have included a function for up to 20 people at the Arkaba Hotel, donated by the Hurley Group.

Jenny Hurley, matriarch of the Hurley Hotel Group, is the Foundation patron and chair, alongside her husband and industry figure Peter Hurley.

The annual Chip In Golf Day has been running now for five years. This year, it selected Keith Community Hospital as the beneficiary with the funds raised going to the creation of dedicated palliative care rooms.

That will include a complete refurbishment of existing spaces in the hospital and upgrades to two patient rooms, lounge and kitchenette. It will also provide access to an outdoor area, and a room for family members to stay overnight.

The day saw $106,833 raised. The cumulative total for the event now totals  $482,909.

Janet Allen, Chair of the Keith & District Hospital told the Foundation, “We feel very privileged and excited to be chosen to receive this funding from The Mary Potter Foundation. We are grateful to know that patients and families will have a dedicated space to be together in their final days.”
