RSPCA presents Perth’s cruelty free restaurants

From the RSPCA comes a new initiatives for Perth consumers who care about animal cruelty and their food’s origins.

The RSPCA has a Choose Wisely website listing WA restaurants, cafes and other outlets offering  humanely farmed eggs, chicken and pork

These also happen to be some of Australia's most intensively farmed animal food products.

What exactly does “choose wisely” mean?

It’s basically food produced with the welfare of the animal as a priority. The aim is to shed some light on the jargon behind marketing terms like “free range”, “barn raised” and “cage free”.

The website allows people to do searches by cuisine type and every type of outlet from hotels to retail outlets. You can even find places by post code.

It is also very much a social media strategy, drawing people to eating spots that serve eggs, chicken and pork that have been farmed with animal welfare as the priority.

It invites businesses to register by providing details of their suppliers to get ratings of either “We're on the way” or “Humane food all the way”.

It also asks people to get their favourite eating to spot to sign up. And it calls on consumers to use the hash tags #RSPCAchoosewisely #ichosewisely #eathumane #humanefood and #cagefreeeggs. It even has a presence on Twitter and Facebook.

At the moment, there are only six listings for “humane all the way” within 25 kilometres of Perth’s CBD: Jamie's Italian Perth, Co-Op Dining in East Perth, Bill's Bar, The Garden and The Bue Flamingo in Leederville, and Fremantle's Moore & Moore.

“Humane all the way” means that the restaurant serves up only cage free eggs, whether that’s on the plate, or in sauces or in baking. Also, it means the restaurant’s chicken and pork comes from RSPCA-approved farming systems.

“On the way” is for restaurants that use some humane food in their menu. They also have to welcome customer questions about which items use ingredients from higher welfare farming.

There are about 70 restaurants and cafes in that category within 25 kilometres of Perth’s CBD.
