Tourism surges for Coffs Harbour eatery after Robert Irwin’s accidental dine and dash

A Coffs Harbour restaurant has seen a surge in attention and goodwill after television presenter and zookeeper, Robert Irwin mistakenly left without paying for his meal.

The Jetty Pavilion became the focus of national headlines this week when the wildlife presenter and conservationist, son of the late Steve Irwin, stopped in for dinner during a road trip. Irwin, who was mobbed by fans seeking selfies and autographs, was ushered out by staff with a takeaway box of his meal so he could dine in peace — but forgot to settle the bill.

“I just did the old dine and dash,” Irwin said on Instagram. “I felt terrible.” He went on to praise the eatery as a “fantastic local business” with a “great team,” “great food” and “amazing atmosphere”.

The restaurant declined Irwin’s offer to repay the bill, and instead shared their appreciation on social media, saying they were “still buzzing” from the experience. The post, amplified by Irwin’s mother Terri and sister Bindi, has since sparked international interest in the venue and the broader Coffs Coast region.

“Your kind words have created an incredible boost of tourism and spirit for the Coffs Coast,” the restaurant posted. “You’ve not only shone a light on us but on the incredible local producers, artisans, and landscapes that make this region so special.”

The Jetty Pavilion concluded with a warm offer: “The door’s always open for you. A lifetime of free salads, that’s for certain!”
