Jamie Oliver gives Marrickville’s Cornersmith Cafe a big compliment on pickles
JUST like their local fans, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver loves Cornersmith Cafe’s signature pickles, made in their very own kitchen.
Jamie Oliver for Jamie Oliver's Super Food
The English chef and restaurateur commented on an Instagram picture of Cornersmith Cafe’s first dill pickle delivery for the season.
“Love your feed guys and I love pickles! Good luck, big love, Jamie x x x,” he said.
Owner Alex Elliot-Howery said she had always admired Jamie Oliver from afar.
“I’ve always been a big fan of what he does, and that he is taking it out to the masses and not just catering to the people that understand it already,” she said.
“I love what he does with the lunch programs in the UK and in the United States, changing the way that kids are eating.”
Ms Elliot-Howery is making changes of her own in local schools and the community with a fresh food philosophy that inspires healthier lifestyles.
“What we are doing is on a much smaller scale, but we are trying to make people more confident and inspired to get out of the supermarket and back into the kitchen,” she said.
“We were just working with kids from Dulwich Hill Primary School, where they grew all the greens that we put on our poached egg rolls – so we gave back all the money we made on those to stimulate their edible garden project.”
The small family-run cafe has seasonal menus that use locally-sourced produce from small-scale growers, ethically produced meats and their signature housemade pickles.
A popular choice that evolves with each season is the ploughman’s plate, which incorporates pickles, mustard, sauerkraut, free range meat, sourdough, cheddar, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
The pickles that caught Oliver’s attention come from their nearby picklery, which is an open kitchen.
They also share the art of sustainable and ethical food production with amateur foodies, running classes in pickling, preserving, baking, bread-making, fermenting, cheesemaking and beekeeping.
“It’s great to have the cafe, which gets attention – and then behind the scenes we have this strong drive to spread the knowledge where the food comes from and how we need to make changes,” Ms Elliot-Howery said.
