Secretary for the Hunter says reckless alcohol promotions won't be tolerated

Reckless alcohol promotions and underage liquor sales have angered the parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald.

Liquor officials this week announced that a Newcastle hotel had been sanctioned for a 'win-your-weight in beer' promotion.

A Central Coast bottle shop also became the first take away liquor outlet in the state to have its licence suspended under new liquor laws.

Mr MacDonald said he makes no apologies for the tough action taken against them.

"It might sound tough, I suppose, but we really need to be very careful, and I strongly support the Government in this," he said.

"I mean it's the government agencies from the health, education, family and community services. They have to pick up the pieces. Their budgets are stretched when alcohol is abused."

Mr MacDonald said the damage caused by alcohol cannot be underestimated.

"Now, we have other problems in the community around drugs, but alcohol is still the predominant cause of many of our ills in our society when it abused," he said.

"As I say, that is everything from car crashes to health problems, to not finishing your education, and a range of issues."
