Push to bring Tasting Australia to Perth

Australia's most internationally recognised food and wine event, Tasting Australia, may find a new home in WA if the State Government agrees to a funding proposal.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames is understood to be considering the proposal from event organisers Subiaco-based Consuming Passions - which has been running the event for the South Australian Government for 16 years - to bring the week-long, food tourism showcase to Perth from 2014.

"Naturally being proud Sandgropers we're falling over ourselves to bring it to WA," managing director David Evans said.

WA Tourism and event authorities passed on the event when it was first pitched to them in 1997, a lack of foresight, according to organisers, which has cost the State $100 million of international media and travel exposure across Asian, European and North American markets.

This year's event - which is on now - has attracted a 100-strong contingent of food and wine media from Sweden, France, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, the US, Britain and Australia as well as a raft of celebrity participants including My Kitchen Rules star Pete Evans, Maggie Beer, Stephanie Alexander, Matt Moran, Poh Ling Yeow, Guy Grossi and George Calombaris.

The proposal has strong backing from the State Opposition. Shadow tourism minister Michelle Roberts said: "It's the kind of event we need here. It ticks all the right boxes. It promotes our produce and . . . local producers, it has a strong regional focus and it has a massive public participation component.

"Just look at how the Mundaring Truffle Festival has gone from a standing start to a large-scale public event in just three years - there's clearly a strong public desire for these sorts of events."

Celebrity chef Pete Evans said Consuming Passions would drive a strong event in WA.

It's not clear when the WA Government will make a decision on the proposal or whether the proposal has its backing.
