Footscray restaurant blaze blankets Melbourne's west in smoke

A fire at a Footscray restaurant this morning has caused around $300,000 damage and blanketed Melbourne's west in thick smoke.

The fire broke out on the second story of the M Bar and Restaurant on Barkly Street just before 4:00am.

It took fire crews around half an hour to control the blaze.

A warning has been issued to people in the area about thick smoke and traffic in the area.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
