Darwin hotel worker critical after e-scooter crash

A young Darwin hospitality worker remains in hospital with serious head injuries after her e-scooter was allegedly struck by a car on her way home from a shift. The accident has prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues and the wider Darwin community.

Twenty-something Gigi Nathalie had been working at a Darwin hotel and was riding through the intersection of Garramilla Boulevard and McMinn Street in Darwin City about 9.20pm on September 7 when police say a white Toyota Corolla struck her.

The driver stopped and administered first aid before emergency services arrived, and Northern Territory Police confirmed the driver returned negative alcohol and drug tests.

St John NT said paramedics treated Nathalie for serious head injuries before transporting her to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition. She is currently stable and continues to receive treatment. Friends and colleagues said she remained in an induced coma following the crash.

Originally from Indonesia, Nathalie moved to Australia for work. Her friends and colleagues have launched a fundraiser to bring her parents to Darwin so they can be at her bedside.

"Gigi is far from home," organisers wrote. "She came to Australia to work hard, build a future, and create opportunities for herself and her family."

Organisers described her as a "kind, caring and hardworking young woman" who brought warmth and positivity to those around her.

The fundraiser was established to cover the family's flights, accommodation, transport and other costs associated with travelling to Darwin at short notice. By Friday it had raised more than $12,400 from 150 donations, surpassing its $12,000 target.

A spokesperson for the family said Nathalie's parents were working to reach Darwin as quickly as possible.

"The family is obviously extremely shocked and we're trying to get them over to Darwin as fast as we can," the spokesperson said. "But the number one thing is they just can't believe the generosity and the help people have been providing from Darwin."

"The community has really come out and supported her."

The case highlights road safety risks for hospitality staff finishing shifts late at night, with e-scooters a common option for venue workers travelling home outside public transport hours.

The family urged both motorists and riders to take greater care. "Just remember to wear a helmet and also make sure you're driving safely," the spokesperson said. "And if you're a driver, keep an eye out for these scooters."

Northern Territory Police said the circumstances surrounding the crash remained under investigation.
