A man has allegedly threatened a driver with a hose after being hit by a car at a fast food restaurant in Darwin.

NT Police said a 32-year-old male driver went to the McDonald's drive-through restaurant on Bagot Rd to buy some breakfast on Friday morning.

"It was still dark and raining when he pulled in and unfortunately he bumped into a male standing in the carpark," Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said.

"The bump did not cause the male to fall."

She said the driver got out of his vehicle to check the man was not hurt and apologised for the incident.

"The male did not appear injured and mumbled something the driver did not understand in reply."

Supt Jorgensen said the driver walked into the restaurant but on exiting he saw the man he had bumped earlier had a length of hose in his hands, challenging him to fight.

Fearing he would be assaulted, the driver returned inside and asked staff to call the police.

"The male then picked up a chair and threw it at the driver, hitting his head.

"Not satisfied with this retribution, the male then picked up the hose and smashed the driver's side window, front window and kicked the front panel of the driver's vehicle. He then ran away.

Supt Jorgensen said police attended the scene and located the alleged 29-year-old offender a short distance away in Coconut Grove.

He was arrested, charged and will appear in court next month.
