Westpac data shows midweek pub spend surges
Wednesday is the fastest-growing day for pub and club spending in Australia, with year-on-year growth more than three times the weekly average.
According to new Westpac DataX analysis, spending on the day rose 6.1 per cent, even though Friday and Saturday still account for the biggest total spend.
Transactions on Wednesdays climbed 5.4 per cent, while average transaction value increased just 0.7 per cent. The figures suggest the growth is being driven by more frequent visits rather than bigger bar tabs.
Westpac spokesperson Luke Oxley said the data may point to a shift in how Australians are structuring their social lives.
“Rather than saving downtime for the weekend, Australians appear to be making the most of the middle of the week too, whether that’s to break up the working week or get a head start on catching up with friends,” Oxley said.
“From pub trivia to after-work drinks, or simply wanting to avoid the weekend crowds, Wednesday is emerging as a genuine night out in its own right.”
Other days of the week were largely flat. Pub spend rose 0.7 per cent on Monday, 0.3 per cent on Thursday and 0.4 per cent on Friday, while Tuesday recorded stronger growth of 2.3 per cent.
Oxley said the trend is not limited to one demographic or region.
“With cost-of-living pressures still front of mind, a midweek catch-up can feel like a smaller, easier option – a possible sign Australians are adapting, rather than stepping back.”
Greater Melbourne and Greater Sydney remained the biggest-spending regions on Wednesdays, while the Australian Capital Territory posted the largest year-on-year increase at 11.5 per cent.
By age group, 18 to 24-year-olds drove the fastest growth, with spend up 12.1 per cent year-on-year, more than three times the rate of any other day for that cohort. Australians aged 55 to 74 showed a similar pattern, with Wednesday also their fastest-growing day, up 7.6 per cent.
