The blaze started accidentally in the hotel's kitchen just after 1:00am and forced the evacuation of about 40 guests from their rooms.

About 30 firefighters took 25 minutes to contain the blaze.

Damage has been limited to the kitchen and restaurant area, but it is understood smoke also got into the air-conditioning unit, causing some damage.

A spokesman for the hotel told the ABC it was too early to say how long the kitchen would be out of action.

The rest of the hotel will operate normally today.
