An armed robber threw a bag at a Scarborough hotel worker and threatened him with a knife before running away with stolen cash.

Regional Investigation Unit officers are appealing to the public to identify the bandit from CCTV images taken at the time of the robbery on Thursday, August 28.

Around 7pm, the man entered the reception of the hotel located on West Coast Highway.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the man produced a big carving knife and demanded money from the male attendant.

"He then threw a bag at the attendant while holding a white jumper in front of his own face to disguise his appearance," she said.

He was given an amount of cash before running from the hotel, south along West Coast Highway towards Scarborough Beach Road.

Anyone who can identify the man is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
