Stockton pub patrons subdue armed robber
A brazen attempt to rob a Newcastle-area pub ended with the would-be thief tackled to the ground by locals, after staff and patrons at the Boatrowers Hotel in Stockton banded together to fight him off.
Matthew Bourke entered the waterfront hotel on a Saturday night and made his way behind the bar, brandishing what he presented as a firearm to intimidate staff and access the till. The weapon later proved to be a gel blaster.
The robbery quickly unravelled when patrons intervened. One man confronted Bourke directly, swinging a barstool at him. Bourke responded by threatening to shoot him before producing a knife and stabbing the patron in the shoulder — a serious escalation that still failed to stop the resistance. The wounded man threw a second stool at Bourke, who by that point was attempting to flee with cash in hand.
His exit was further complicated when he encountered a woman who had been recording the incident on her phone.
"Give me that phone!" he was heard demanding. She held her ground, causing Bourke to drop part of the stolen money before another patron advanced on him with a barstool.
He didn't get far. Several locals gave chase and brought him down outside the venue.
The patron who was stabbed recovered without lasting injury. Bourke was subsequently convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for the robbery.
For the hospitality industry, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the situations pub staff and patrons can find themselves in — and the remarkable, if dangerous, instinct of a local crowd to protect their local.
