Night shift workers; An extra hour's work without any extra pay as daylight savings time ends

As daylight saving time comes to an end on Sunday, 7 April 2024, Deputy emphasises the need for awareness among employers and employees, particularly those in sectors that operate overnight shifts. The shift back in time affects regions including the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria, where clocks will adjust from 3:00 AM back to 2:00 AM.

“This change introduces a unique scenario for overnight workers, who will find themselves on duty for an additional hour. Despite the extended work period, the nature of most employment agreements means that this extra hour may not be recognised in terms of additional pay due to the common 'by the clock' approach to calculating work hours and wages,” said Deep Banerji, Chief Product Officer for Deputy, the global platform for hourly work.

“Conversely, when daylight saving time begins, these same workers are able to experience an hour less in their shifts due to the clocks moving forward if scheduled to work that shift as well. Communication between businesses and employees is key to navigating any confusion regarding this logic.Deputy is designed to help navigate the challenges associated with daylight saving adjustments by keeping accurate and transparent records of which employees should be scheduled for the next clock change transition to ensure a fair and transparent approach to scheduling and payroll.”
