Hotel Rottnest begins $24m revamp

Hotel Rottnest has kicked off its $24 million makeover, which aims to double its size to cater for what is hoped is an influx of visitors coming to take selfies with the quokkas that inhabit the island.

The revamp of the island hotel will add an extra 80 luxury rooms, two pools, a reception pavilion, grassed areas and function facilities to cater for up to 250 people.

The existing hotel and bar will remain open during construction and work is expected to be completed in time for the summer season.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said Rottnest was on track to reach its 2034 target of attracting 800,000 visitors a year more than a decade earlier than planned.

“Rottnest Island continues to experience huge visitation numbers, which is why our investment towards key infrastructure is vital in ensuring the island’s sustainability into the future,” he said.

“The reinvigoration of Rottnest is well under way, with the opening of Discovery, the start of the hotel redevelopment and concept planning to improve the visitor experience on the main jetty.

“Whether it is premium hotel rooms, a classic Rottnest unit overlooking the bay or a glamping experience, we are definitely bringing more variety to the island and ensuring Rottnest’s appeal will continue into the future.”

Rottnest has hit the headlines recently with an influx of A-list celebrities lining up to have their picture taken with the cuddly wildlife which are unique to the island.
