Mosman Rowers Club damaged by blaze

The heritage-listed Mosman Rowers Club caught fire on Wednesday morning only days after renovations were completed.

The fire was caused by the chimney of a gas heater catching fire in the ceiling of the building.

Fire crews put the blaze out by pulling down the area of the ceiling around the fire. There was no structural damage to the premises and the fire was contained to the building.

Fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to find hotspots of heat and had the situation under control within 30 minutes of the call being made.

In all, 20 vehicles from Fire and Rescue NSW were used, including a firefighting tugboat which used floating booms to prevent any run-off from the fire in the water near the pier from floating out into the harbour.

The Mosman Rowers board praised the "brilliant" work of fire crews in a Facebook post, adding that the club will reopen “as soon as possible”.
