Dogs to join cafe society

Dogs could soon be allowed in outdoor dining areas in Tasmania under a proposal to remove restrictions Australia wide.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand wants to amend the food standards code which restricts animals in outdoor areas operated by food businesses.

The agency says New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria allow dogs and the law is inconsistent.

An agency assessment found a low safety risk of spreading diseases from dogs to humans in outdoor dining areas.

It also found the hospitality industry would benefit from the restriction removal and suggested the opportunities for business to explore niche markets.

Tasmanians have until June to make a submission.
