Crown Melbourne gets green light for the tallest tower in Melbourne

Crown Casino Melbourne

The Andrews Government has approved plans for casino operator Crown Melbourne to build a six-star, 90-storey hotel and apartment complex at Southbank next to its casino complex.

It will be the Australia’s tallest tower.

The tower will feature 388 hotel rooms, visitor attractions and 708 residential apartments.

It will generate 3000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and sustain another 1000 ongoing operational jobs once it’s finished.

As part of the deal with Crown Melbourne and the Schiavello Group, there will be a $100 million community benefits package, including a $25 million upgrade to Queensbridge Square, including landscaping and two new cafes, a further $15 million for the Sandbridge Rail Bridge, landscaping and improvements on Southbank Boulevard, including a new bike strip, street furniture and additional trees along Queensbridge Street, and better connectivity with Freshwater Place.

The building was designed by firm WilkinsonEyre after it won an international design competition.

Premier Daniel Andrews said creating 4000 jobs showed Victoria was the state of momentum.

“This is a bold transformation of Melbourne’s skyline that will build on our state’s reputation as the nation’s leader for tourism,” Mr Andrews said.
