W Hotel comes to Collins Street

Marriott International plans to open a new W Melbourne hotel by 2020.

It will be located in Collins Street, right in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD as part of a $1 billion mixed-use luxury development.

The hotel itself will feature 294 guestrooms.

It will have 40 suites including an ‘Extreme Wow Suite’ – the Marriott version of the traditional Presidential Suite.

It will also feature a bar and restaurant, a day spa, fitness centre and an indoor heated swimming pool.

The hotel will have 1200 square metres of event and meeting space for large conferences and smaller meetings alike.

It will also have premium office, retail and commercial space across two towers, linked at the top by a residential bridge.

The broad footprint in the design will allow hotel guests to enter the property from William Street, Market Street, Collins Street and Flinders Lane.

The hotel is all part of a deal with developer Cbus Property.

The W-branded hotel has been pre-sold to Japan’s Daisho group for more than $200 million.

The deal is one of Melbourne’s largest single hotel transactions.

The Melbourne hotel in Collins Arch in the eastern tower of the landmark dual tower project will be the second W hotel brand in Australia.

The first will be opening in Brisbane at the end of the year.

And there are plans to bring one to Sydney.

According to Marriott International vice-president Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Sean Hunt, the chain is now talking to Grocon and Chinese-backed Greaton to have a W Hotel in Sydney’s Darling Harbour as part of the $700 million The Ribbon project.

The deal, brokered by Michael Simpson of Savills, commits Daisho, which also owns Sydney’s Park Hyatt, to buying the completed property.

“This is a globally significant deal, bringing a world-class hotel brand in W Hotels to Melbourne’s most ambitious architectural project, set to be a world-class destination for Melbourne visitors and locals alike,” Mr Simpson told The Australian.
