Liquor compliance checks help keep snow visitors safe

Liquor & Gaming NSW compliance officers will visit venues in the NSW ski fields next week to ensure they are complying with their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) obligations to help patrons stay safe while enjoying hospitality venues in the Snowy Mountains.

The inspections will see officers conducting covert compliance checks at licensed venues in Jindabyne, Thredbo and Perisher.  Liquor & Gaming NSW Executive Director Regulatory Operations Dimitri Argeres said the 2026 season highlights the importance of responsible alcohol service, with strong visitor numbers expected despite below-average snowfall and a later start to the snow season.

“The recent snowfall has provided a welcome boost to the Snowy Mountains, with visitors continuing to embrace the region’s winter experiences, events and hospitality,” Mr Argeres said.

“With more people expected to spend time in restaurants, bars, pubs and other licensed venues, it is important that hospitality staff remain focused on their RSA obligations and the safety of patrons.

“To ensure everyone has a safe experience and venues have a successful season, our compliance officers will be checking that hospitality staff are meeting their legal responsibilities, including preventing under-age drinking and refusing service to intoxicated patrons.

“Compliance levels last year remained strong across the 37 venues inspected, with more than 90 per cent operating in accordance with their obligations. While a small number of matters required further assessment, no enforcement action was necessary.

“Most venues do the right thing, but we need to remain vigilant to ensure the snowfields and surrounding communities remain safe and welcoming for everyone.”

Permitting intoxication on licensed premises or supplying liquor to an intoxicated person or a minor are among the most serious offences under the Liquor Act 2007, attracting penalties of up to $11,000, 12 months' imprisonment, or both.
