Perth boasts the second-best hotel in the world

So the second best hotel in the world is in Perth.

Leading travel publisher Conde Nast says COMO the Treasury in Perth was voted the second best behind Ireland's Ballyfin in its Readers Choice Awards.

Other hotels in the top five were the Hotel Matilda in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; Umaid Bhawan Palace (Taj) in Jodhpur, India; and the Summer Lodge Country House Hotel in Dorset, England.

Significantly, COMO The Treasury was the only Australia hotel on the list of 50.

The hotel was created out of a $580 million dollar redevelopment of the Cathedral Avenue precinct. The architects created it by converting both the Lands and Titles Buildings and the Old Treasury Building, giving it a layout maintaining the corridors and cellular structure of the original buildings.

Traveller.com.au's reviewer Ute Junker went so far as to say the COMO is the best city hotel in Australia.

She said service there "hits the mark every time: friendly, informal, and utterly faultless"

She said the rooms have "a sense of tranquillity, provided by neutral tones and an uncluttered aesthetic that lets the elegant lines of the period architecture shine through".

Traveller magazine said the COMO really stands out in the Australian hotel market.

"Perth may not have as much clout as Sydney or Melbourne, but this sleek COMO outpost — the brand’s first hotel Down Under — might just help set a change in motion," the magazine said.

"Part of the $580 million Cathedral Square development, the hotel occupies the top floors of three 140-year-old buildings, and happily embraces period accents — see the roofline’s copper trim, and reinstalled dormer windows.”

"Jed Gerrard’s Wildflower, the hotel’s glassed-in rooftop restaurant, offers more than just an impressive experience — when you taste the kangaroo, delicately smoked over jarrah ambers and served with grilled blueberry dressing, you’ll get what we mean.”

Of course, the 48-room Commodore is not made for everyone.  It comes at a price.

Accommodation starts at $595 a night.
