Ovolo Hotels makes its presence in Sydney

Hong Kong based entrepreneur Girish Jhunjhnuwala has really made an impression in Sydney with his luxury Ovolo brand hotel in Sydney’s Finger Wharf in Woollloomooloo, located in one of the city’s most iconic, heritage-listed spaces

The hotel, which the Ovolo group acquired from India Hotels Company, trading at the time as Taj Hotels, for $32 million was put through a $20 million refurbishment.

And it’s paid off big time.

The 100 room site in Cowper Wharf Road was ranked No 47 with TripAdvisor in February and has since moved up the scale to be ranked the second most popular on the US travel website. That’s number two out of a field of 179 Sydney hotels.

It boasts an average occupancy of 85 per cent.

The refurbishment has given it a number of new event spaces, located in the previous hotel’s lobby and reception area. The area has been transformed into a high-end, adaptable area catering for all sizes of events, from 12 to 350 people.

The hotel has 11 spaces as part of the new development. People can spend time in the ranging from the Darlo and The Piper Room. Or they can head to the Kitchen Table and the Lo Lounge.

Every space has been designed with different uses and aesthetics in mind and comes with state-of-the-art AV equipment, Wi-Fi, and stationery.

It has exposed wood beams and floorings. All this has been restored as part of the design aesthetic.

The architects have designed it in a way that offers a mix of both modernity and the waterfront property’s history.

They have added metallic light pendants, bold furniture pieces and pastel murals on movable wall panels which have been designed exclusively for the property.

The aim is to create something that meshes with the Ovolo Woolloomooloo overall atmosphere.

The Ovolo Group also runs the Ovolo in Darling Harbour and two properties in Melbourne.
