Food poisoning probe at Crown Casino

by Leon Gettler

The Victorian Department of Health is investigating a case of food poisoning at Crown Casino’s up market restaurant The Conservatory.

Up to 14 people became ill after having high tea there on Saturday February 6.

The Department of Health is now investigating the illnesses and is taking samples of the food which comprised cold meats and cheese. It is also taking samples from the diners.

According to the Department of Health, the Melbourne City Council had inspected the restaurant the week before and had supervised a clean-up.

The department maintains that the only people who fell ill were those who had dined at The Conservatory on that day.

The unlucky diners told reporters that the meal left them feeling sick for three days.

One of the diners, identified as Melissa told Radio 3AW:

"A group of us went for afternoon tea at The Conservatory at Crown last Saturday, and by Sunday night there were five of us who were incredibly unwell.

"And since then, during the week, another two people then became unwell and then there's been another three who have become unwell."

She said people who had come in contact with the diners had also been affected.

"One of the people who had been in contact with us – not from the original party – she had to go to hospital, because she's pregnant. She's be quite unwell and dehydrated," she said.
