Sydney pubs up for top awards at AHA NSW awards night

SYDNEY’S best pubs will vie for top honours at the Australian Hotels Association awards night and the Collaroy is expecting to provide touch competition for the a swag of other venues competing.

The rebranded and refurbished beachfront establishment is in the running for hotel of the year at the AHA NSW awards for excellence.

This year’s 15 contenders vying for the big award include last year’s winner, The Oaks, Charing Cross Hotel, The Beresford, Establishment, The Golden Sheaf and Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel

“We’re up against a stellar group of finalists,” group marketing manager Kate Peters said.

“I believe we are in with a good chance to win. It has been a big year for the hotel.”

Public House Management Group’s northern beaches venue has seven nominations including best redeveloped hotel, best burger, cocktail bartender, outstanding community service and achievement, and best casual dining (northern).

Nominations reflect current trends from casual food to fit-outs, Ms Peters said.

“It has been a big year for pub refurbishments, pubs have kept their spirit but they have become more sophisticated,” she said.

“We are also up best casual dining, we have focused on food and have reinvented the bar food.”

Food categories are hotly contested, AHA NSW chief executive John Whalan said.

“This year we have received a record number of nominations across 40 awards with the food categories being hotly contested,’ he said.

“Food has become an important part of the social fabric in Australia.”

Local nominees include Daniel San, Terrey Hills Tavern and Mona Vale Hotel, The Belrose Hotel is a finalist in three categories — community service and achievement, best family friendly hotel and best retail liquor outlet.

The industry awards ceremony will be held at the The Star.
