New CBD cafe drums up African appeal and flavour

TOOWOOMBA'S cafe culture has received a nother boost with the reopening of the Margaret St premises left behind by Findo's.

The Big 5 cafe comes complete with an African feel, paying homage to their blends of coffee, as well as a bit of fun for customers.

After working to repair mainly industrial coffee machines for about five years, owner Nico Harmsen said he and wife Sarah were ready to be their own boss.

He said the exposure in Brisbane had given him a love for cafe culture, spurring his desire to be on the other side of the counter.

"Toowoomba has more a soft taste for coffee, whereas in Brisbane it's about stronger flavours," he said.

Mrs Harmsen said she was moving on from a career drawing blood as a phlebotomist.

The worst she will now see from customers is a strong case of fatigue.

"We want to continue to offer customers what they loved with Findo's Cafe, but we've got our own flavours, and homemade foods," she said.

Mrs Harmsen said the pair was still finding their feet with the new business.

Cold drip coffee will be a feature at The Big 5, as well as a Red Expresso; caffeine-free Rooibos tea, pulled the same way as coffee.

Mrs Harmsen said the African feel covered everything from the wooden furniture the pair made together, to the artwork on the walls.

The pair has children, aged 5, 9 and 11.

The official opening is on Monday between 7am-8.30am at 160 Margaret St.

The cafe opens from 7am-2pm Monday to Friday.
