New IHG hotel in Melbourne’s Southbank looking to reduce carbon footprint

The Holiday Inn Express Melbourne Southbank is preparing to open its doors to guests in late December.

The 345-room hotel is the fifth Holiday Inn Express to open in Australia by boutique investment firm, Pro-invest Group.

Over the next five years the Group expects to nearly double its hotel assets in Australia and New Zealand

“Construction works are well underway on our Sydney Airport site which is due to open early next year,” said Pro-invest Group chief executive Ronald Barrott.

“By 2021 we anticipate a total room count of 2,458 rooms across 11 properties.”

Pro-invest Group is reducing its carbon footprint through a range of energy saving initiatives across its portfolio of hotels, with Melbourne Southbank leading the way targeting a 5-Star NABERS Energy Rating through a partnership with Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

Barrott said green features such as high performance glazing, high efficiency air-cooled chillers, rooftop solar and regenerative lift drives provided substantial energy savings.

“This includes a recycling partnership with Scouts Australia, replacing plastic water bottles with refillable glass bottles, removing plastic drinking draws and introducing our ‘A Greener Stay’ initiative,” he said.
