Ice machine compliance update
GEMS, R290 & watermark certification
There have been a number of changes in the ice machine market recently, along with some confusion around what they mean in practice.
From March 2026, new Australian energy efficiency requirements under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) framework apply to ice machines manufactured from that date. Products manufactured prior to this can continue to be supplied, provided they meet the applicable requirements at the time of manufacture and can be verified if required.
Alongside GEMS, WaterMark certification remains a legal requirement for applicable models. At the same time, our supply partner Manitowoc ice Machines are introducing updated models with R290 natural refrigerant. These upgrades are delivering improved energy efficiency and in in many cases improved performance and reduced energy consumption.
Ice machine ranges are currently being updated to reflect these changes, including revised model numbers, compliance details and refrigerant specifications. Updated catalogues and product materials will be made available when this transition is complete.
To make these changes clear:
- Product listings will include GEMS (AIM) numbers
- GEMS (AIM) number must be displayed on all sales and marketing materials
- Updated models will be identified on the website and any marketing materials
- Product flyers will clearly highlight compliance and refrigerant changes
As compliance requirements evolve, ensuring equipment meets current standards is critical. These updates provide greater transparency around product performance, regulatory alignment and energy efficiency.
