Guns and floods: Father’s Day 'curse' continues for Como cafe owner

The Father's Day "curse" continues for cafe owner Adam Gannon after he discovered a burst water main had closed his business on one of the busiest days of the year.

But he's thankful this time no one was threatened at gunpoint.

The burst pipe cut the cafe's water supply and deprived the staff from serving their most precious commodity – coffee.

"Without coffee, being a coffee shop, it's kind of pointless," Mr Gannon said.

It's not the first time Mr Gannon has been hit by misfortune on Father's Day.

"It's a bit of a curse for me," he said.

Business at the Ley St Cafe was also stifled last Father's Day.

"Last year I got robbed the night before Father's Day," Mr Gannon said.

"I had two guys jump me at the back of my shop."

Mr Gannon said the thieves took off with $3000 of the shop's takings after threatening him with guns.

"The next morning there was still forensics and I couldn't open for two hours," he said.

Mr Gannon, however, has a gift for accentuating the positive.

"I'm looking at the bright side," he said, reflecting on the Father's Day flooding.

"I get to go home with my kids."

Mr Gannon plans to spend the day with his daughters Abigail, 3, and Isla, 1, instead of his customers.

It's understood the Everest Nepalese Cafe and Restaurant was also disrupted by the burst water main.

Emma, a local coffee lover, said it was a real shame about the flooding.

"The cafe's a total local institution... it's buzzing every weekend.

"This would have been an amazing day of revenue."

Mr Gannon was upbeat about next Father's Day.

"Hopefully nothing happens next year, I just open and operate," he said.
