Researchers find pear juice can ward off hangovers

A fruit that is under-loved in Australia could prevent your next hangover.

A research project into the nutritional makeup of pears has uncovered that the humble fruit can ward off hangovers and lower blood alcohol levels.

As part of a scoping study funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia, the CSIRO is looking to discover the hidden health benefits of pears.

Professor Manny Noakes, research director for Nutrition and Health with the CSIRO, said so far the results were surprising.

"Believe it or not, there are effects that pears may have on the amount of blood alcohol after an alcoholic drink," she said.

But, if you are having a big night on the booze, do not rush for a pear just yet.

"I should make the point that the effect was demonstrated if you take pear juice before alcohol consumption," Professor Noakes said.

"So there is no evidence that you can take pear after alcohol consumption.

"Once you have a hangover, there is no evidence that it will do you any good."

Professor Noakes suggested "PEAR-rocca" might be a product of the future.

The study also found that pears could help lower cholesterol, relieve constipation and have anti-inflammatory effects.

The final document, which will be completed in two months, will guide the industry on how to better market pears and what further research is required.

"You may never look at the pear in the same way ever again," Professor Noakes said.
