Celebration of all things French at Ortem Cafe

FRENCH Alliance of Toowoomba's Sylvie Hayere said the recent Bastille Day event was celebrated in a "merry French spirit".

Ms Hayere said the group gathered on Sunday, July 12 at Ortem Cafe to celebrate France's national day (July 14).

She said celebrations included an exclusively French menu of onion soup, pâté, bourguignon beef, chicken vol-au-vent, cheese platter and crème caramel, with exquisite French wine sourced from different wine-making regions.

"Many of our guests dressed up in typical French attires for the occasion, donning berets and the national colours," Ms Hayere said.

She said renowned Kay Sullivan provided entertainment of French folk songs played on her accordion and there were "hearty laughs" and success in the sing along of the French tune Aloutte.

Guests were also challenged with a French trivia quiz and sponsor Preston Peak Winery rewarded winners of prize wine bottles.

Ms Hayere said there was also a raffle organised to support the French Alliance of Kathmandu (Nepal) in the reconstruction of their buildings destroyed as a result of the deadly earthquakes.

Currently the French Alliance of Toowoomba offers classes of French languages at five different levels, from complete beginners to fluent discussions.

The group's next event will be held at the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival on August 9.

Ms Hayere encouraged locals to come along to say "bonjour", explore the French culture and/or join the French Alliance in Toowoomba.
