Victoria’s Department of Health is investigating a salmonella outbreak at a top Melbourne hotel after 34 people fell ill.
The outbreak has been linked to high tea at the five-star Langham hotel in Southbank, News Corp Australia and Fairfax Media report.
The Herald Sun says 66 people who attended the high teas on July 11 and 12 have been tracked down by the Department of Health.
Of those, 34 cases of salmonella poisoning have been identified so far, with six of those serious enough to require hospital treatment. The department has confirmed six people have been treated in hospital, but did not release their conditions.
The Age newspaper says the Langham is co-operating with investigators and is contacting guests directly.
Langham managing director Ben Sington told The Age it was hotel policy to freeze samples of food served to guests. These samples had been provided to investigators, along with detailed food logs.
Salmonellosis cases have increased by 130% in the past six years, hitting 3,693 cases in 2014, the Herald Sun reported.
