We’ve had a skim-ful! Surry Hills cafe Single Origin Roaster declares war on low fat milk
Surry Hills cafe Single Origin Roasters has declared war on low fat milk because they reckon it ruins the perfect cup of coffee.
A barista there told The Daily Telegraph a storewide ban was imposed on skim earlier this year — forcing customers into a choice of either soy or full cream milk.
“We’re not really behind the whole skim is healthier thing,” she said. “Skim milk splits — it’s not good for making coffee.”
But health professionals are concerned the skim sanction is depriving customers of opting for low cholesterol alternatives.
“The principal is all about providing the public with healthier choices so that they can decide what’s healthier for them,” Heart Foundation nutritionist Shane Landon said.
“Reducing the amount of unnecessary saturated fat in your diet … low fat dairy products are one way of doing that.”
Full cream milk has more than triple the saturated fat content found in the skim variety. But Single Origins regular customer Mairead Armstrong, 24, couldn’t give a rats about the extra sat fats.
“I just ordered skim to make myself feel better,” she said.
“So when they said they didn’t have skim any more it didn’t bother me and it tastes great, if not better.”
Across town, Leichhardt’s Bar Italia has refused to serve skim since 1952 in honour of the traditional Italian way. They say Single Origin is a little late to the party.
“I think they’re pretty gutsy,” manager Con Damouas said. “We’re an institution, we’ve been doing it for 63 years.”
The Daily Telegraph sampled a large flat white from Single Origin yesterday and gives the brew two full-fat thumbs up.
