THE former headquarters of The Age newspaper is to become home to a Ritz-Carlton hotel as part of a redevelopment of the Melbourne CBD site by owners Far East Consortium.

The Ritz-Carlton will become the centrepiece of the Hong Kong developer’s mixed-use project, which will also include residential apartments and retail components.

The hotel, part of a wave of luxury properties under way in Melbourne, will boast 250 five-star rooms from levels 64 to 77 of the building.

Building on the project, at 250 Spencer Street, will start next year. The hotel is part of a 3000-apartment development planned for the prime site.

Yesterday’s announcement marks the second luxury hotel slated for The Ritz-Carlton in the country, after the brand teamed up with FEC to develop a new hotel at Elizabeth Quay in Perth. The listed hotels group operates 88 hotels across the world.

“We are honoured to partner once again with Far East Consortium on a second, spectacular project in Australia,” Ritz-Carlton president and chief operating officer Herve Humler said.

“We look forward to welcoming Ritz-Carlton guests from around the world to a sensational high-rise hotel in Melbourne.
