EATING from tinned food may not sound like most people’s idea of a gourmet meal.

But one Japanese restaurant chain is proving diners are willing to can the idea of posh when it comes to eating out.

The chain, which first opened in Osaka City Minami Horie, in 2002, is not only renowned for its tinned food but also for the fact that diners eat the food cold with plastic knives and forks.

This is far from your average restaurant, so don’t expect a menu or fancy plates either. Diners simply pick their food straight from the shelves.

But if you’re wondering what the appeal of eating something out a can is, it could be the fact that diners can pick from 300 varieties of food from all across the world.

According to Oddity Central, the fun is in browsing all the different canned foods and trying out new flavours.

Still, tinned food can’t be anywhere near as strange as frog sashimi which, while not a typical Japanese dish, can be served up to customers in a few select restaurants around the country.

The chef cuts open the frog in front of diners before handing over its still-beating heart between a pair of chopsticks.

Japan is renowned for its wacky dining experiences, and sometimes it’s not even about the food.

Its famous Robot Restaurant, situated in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho district, has attracted a cult following, but not necessarily for its cuisine

Instead diners flock to it to experience glitter-clad dancers, boxing Transformers and panda robots dancing to techno music.
