Melbourne foodie signs waiver for doggy bag at George Calombaris restaurant Hellenic Republic

SIGNING a waiver to take home a doggy bag was a masterclass in restaurant red tape, according to one shocked Melbourne foodie.

Monash University student Ross Katsambanis nearly choked on his after dinner mint when he was told to sign on the dotted line moments after he asked to take home his leftover lamb.

The 20-year-old had been celebrating with family members at Lygon St restaurant Hellenic Republic, the Brunswick East venue co-owned by Masterchef host George Calombaris.

“It was really good lamb and there was a lot leftover,” Mr Katsambanis said.

“I asked them to bag it up and the response was, ‘Yes ... but you will have to sign this’ — I thought it was ridiculous.’’

Mr Katsambanis said he had dined at Mr Calombaris’ restaurant before but said the latest experience had been a little strange.

“I wasn’t going to sue anyone. Ninety-nine per cent of people who take home a doggy bag aren’t going to sue anyone.

“I understand why they would do it but it’s red tape gone way too far. It’s ridiculous.’’

Moreland City Council spokesman Marco Bass said today the paperwork was not a local government requirement.

“It’s up to restaurant management if they feel they have to protect themselves from legal action.’’

A spokeswoman for George Calombaris would not comment on the saga.

“It’s kind of a non-issue,” she said.

Other restaurants part-owned by the celebrity chef Calombaris include Gazi and The Press Club.
