A homeless man has pleaded guilty to raping and murdering a Chinese hospitality worker in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens last year.

Scott Miller was charged with two counts of rape and the murder of Yuk Ling Lau as she was walking to work early one morning in June 2014.

He was extradited from New South Wales to face court in Victoria.

Miller, who was 42 at the time of his arrest, was due to face a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning.

Instead, he pleaded guilty to all three charges.

He appeared in the dock and showed no emotion as the magistrate asked him how he pleaded to each of the three charges.

The court had previously heard that Miller suffered from drug-induced psychosis.

Several members of Ms Luk's family were also in court for the hearing, but they are yet to speak.

Miller has been directed to face the Victorian Supreme Court on January 20.
