Crown wins top hotel award

Crown Metropol Perth has picked up one of the top gongs at the Australian Hotels Association awards.

Crown was named Overall Accommodation Hotel of the Year and Australia's Best Redeveloped Accommodation Hotel at a Gold Coast ceremony last night.

North Perth small bar The Classroom received the award for Australia's Best Bar Presentation and Service and Murphy’s Irish Pub in Mandurah received the Outstanding Community Services and High Achievement Award.

AHA WA chief executive Bradley Woods said the awards showed WA's hospitality sector was being recognised as among the best in the country. "WA's tourism and hospitality offering is among the best in Australia," he said. "These awards are testament to that. These awards (also) recognise Crown Perth's significant contribution and investment in WA's tourism and hotel accommodation sector."

Other WA venues that were in the running for various awards but missed out included The Esplanade Hotel in Port Hedland, Parmelia Hilton Perth, The Gate Bar & Bistro, Eagle Bay Brewing Co and the Settlers Tavern.

Andrew Fraser, of Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa, and Jason Alcock, of The Star in Sydney, were both named Chef of the Year and Matt Fitzgerald, of Palmer & Co in NSW, won Bartender of the Year.
