North Adelaide’s Cathedral Hotel is undergoing its first major revamp in 40 years.

A MULTI-million dollar overhaul of North Adelaide’s Cathedral Hotel is on track to be complete before the end of the year.

Renovations at the 164-year-old watering hole, on the corner of O’Connell and Kermode streets, started six weeks ago.

The hotel has experienced a surge in business since AFL matches moved to Adelaide Oval.

“We’re pretty much on track at this stage,” manager Russ Hillier said.

“All the footy crowds we’ve had through with all the games, people are seeing the plans and the pictures up on the wall and obviously with all the building there is a fair bit of interest.”

Work is being completed in two stages so the hotel can keep trading.

“It’s obviously pretty difficult running half a pub and we have a few issues day to day,” Mr Hillier said.

“But we’ve managed to keep two bars open through the whole footy since it started and do the best we can with it.”

The renovations include refurbished front and main bars, new balconies and a beer garden.

The hotel will also reopen its upstairs section for the first time in 20 years.

The number of people the venue can hold will almost double — from 325 to 590.

It also wants to open until 10pm on Sundays to cash in on twilight AFL games at Adelaide Oval.

The last major renovation at the hotel was in the 1970s.
