Adelaide top odds to be first in Australia for adopting pubs with no beer

WHAT’S the bet Adelaide could have a pub with no beer by the end of the year? Three to one in fact.

Following on from a Swedish club promoter’s suggestion that Australia introduce alcohol-free nightclubs, a market on just where this could possibly take place has been drawn up by sportsbet.com.au — and Adelaide is the favourite to be the first in the nation.

With tongue planted firmly in cheek — as even by their own admission it has “virtually no chance” of happening — the betting website places Adelaide at $3 to be the first to try out an alcohol-free late night venue.

At the other end of the spectrum is Darwin, listed at a $34 chance.

“This isn’t a reflection on the people of Adelaide, but some of the rules in place there has them seen as a bit of a Nanny State, followed pretty closely by Sydney and Melbourne,” sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson says.

“But fortunately for them, we aren’t giving it much of a chance that a sober club will ever get off the ground,” he adds.
