Fire rips through favourite Gold Coast dining destination

A favourite Gold Coast dining destination is facing an indefinite closure after a fire broke out at Gemellini Nobby Beach earlier this week, leaving the popular restaurant's reopening date unknown as damage assessments continue.

The restaurant, situated at 2247 Gold Coast Highway in one of the region's most sought-after culinary precincts, sustained a fire just before 7.30pm on April 8, prompting a full evacuation of diners and staff.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman confirmed that three firefighting crews responded to the scene, where they discovered the blaze had taken hold in the restaurant's roof cavity before spreading through ducting and insulation.

Crews equipped with breathing apparatus entered the roof space and successfully extinguished the flames, before carrying out ventilation and atmospheric monitoring. Operations concluded at approximately 8.50pm.

Fire investigators were dispatched to the venue to determine the cause of the blaze, though the outcome of that investigation remains unclear.

Taking to social media the following day, the Gemellini team issued a statement to concerned patrons and the broader hospitality community. "Thanks for all the support last night to everyone in the restaurant," it read. "Everyone is safe. We've had an internal fire and will have to remain closed until further notice. We hope to open asap. Thanks for your patience."

Images shared alongside the post showed firefighters working to extinguish a charred duct near the restaurant's rear access stairs, with earlier video footage capturing the full extent of the blaze.

Alec Carney, one of three brothers behind the Gemellini brand — which also encompasses Gemelli Italian at Broadbeach among other venues — told the Gold Coast Bulletin he was unable to comment at this stage, including on a potential reopening timeline, though he anticipated being in a position to share further detail later in the week.
