New $2M floating venue planned for South Perth foreshore
South Perth could soon welcome a new $2 million floating restaurant and bar, with the team behind The Raft – Old Salt Perth – putting forward plans for a fresh Swan River hospitality hub.
Dubbed South Perth Wharf, the project is earmarked for the Mends Street and South Perth Esplanade precinct, about 1.5–2 kilometres from the CBD, and is pitched as a “contemporary” floating destination featuring 360-degree river views, public walkways and a new public jetty that ties into the existing Midneerup site.
According to the application, the upgraded jetty is designed to “enhance” river-based transport, open up more recreation options and provide a new stopping point for private boat owners.
The floating venue would bring three separate food and beverage offerings to the foreshore: a hybrid bar/restaurant, a compact modern café and a takeaway fish and chips window catering to casual riverfront trade.
The main vessel is planned to cover 432 square metres, supported by a 224-square-metre boardwalk, a 48-square-metre service area and a 38-square-metre gangway linking back to shore. Inside, the restaurant would seat 135 guests, with an additional 52 seats in an alfresco section and 16 more at the café for dine-in takeaway customers.
Trading hours proposed for the restaurant run from 7am to 11pm Sunday to Thursday, extending to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, while the alfresco area would close at 9pm. The application specifies that only background and ambient music will be played through in-house speakers, with no live music on site.
On the food front, the concept is anchored by a “seasonal and sustainable”, a la carte menu showcasing “fresh, local ingredients” sourced from WA producers. Guests can expect shared plates “bursting with flavour”, supported by a drinks program built around a “curated” selection of local and international wines, craft beers and premium spirits.
The wine list is set to feature at least 10 wines by the glass and a 50-strong bottle selection, while the cocktail list will take cues from WA flavours and the waterfront setting. Artisanal sodas, mocktails and other non-alcoholic options will round out the offer.
The proposal puts a strong emphasis on service, stating that their staff will be the “biggest asset”, with the team “empowered” to anticipate needs, personalise interactions and go the extra mile to create “memorable experiences” for guests.
The primary target market is South Perth locals, with the venue aiming to become a neighbourhood staple for after-work drinks, weekend occasions and relaxed catch-ups. At the same time, it’s expected to pull in visitors from across WA and tourists keen on a riverside dining experience.
A letter of endorsement has been provided by senior State Government minister Paul Papalia. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is now assessing the proposal and is inviting public feedback on the plan.
