NRL legend charged with assault over alleged pub incident
Rugby league legend Trevor Gillmeister has been charged over an alleged late-night incident at a Brisbane CBD pub.
Queensland police allege the 61-year-old was involved in a “physical struggle with police” after a “disturbance” at the Stock Exchange Hotel on Charlotte Street on November 14.
In a statement, Queensland Police said officers “were stopped by a member of the public in relation to a physical disturbance inside the Charlotte St venue” just before midnight.
“Upon arrival officers were advised the man had been evicted after allegedly assaulting a staff member.”
Police say they approached the 61-year-old outside the venue and attempted to place him under arrest for public nuisance when things allegedly escalated.
A QPS spokesman said officers tried to speak with the man and inform him he was under arrest for public nuisance, when he allegedly pushed them away.
“It will then be alleged the man became involved in a physical struggle with police before being arrested and transported to a Brisbane City Watch-house.”
Gillmeister has been charged with one count each of public nuisance, assault and obstruct police.
Known to league fans as “The Axe”, Gillmeister enjoyed a decorated playing career, turning out in more than 200 first-grade games and becoming a mainstay of the Queensland Maroons with 22 State of Origin appearances. He also represented Australia in three Test matches.
He was a key member of the Brisbane Broncos’ early glory years, winning back-to-back premierships in 1992 and 1993 and being named the club’s player of the year in 1991.
He is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 2.
