Police escort Mark Latham from ATC’s Grandview Restaurant

Former Australian Labor Party leader Mark Latham was removed from the Australian Turf Club’s (ATC) Grandview Restaurant at Royal Randwick on Saturday after allegedly refusing repeated requests to depart.

Police were called to escort the embattled Upper House member from the venue at about 1.45pm.

A venue spokesperson said Latham arrived at the restaurant despite being barred from the racecourse premises due to being subject to an investigation.” Management could not confirm whether he was attending as a guest of a member, as he claimed, and asked him to leave. He was allegedly at the venue for “several hours” and “kept refusing, was not willing to leave” before police were contacted.

New South Wales Police confirmed officers responded to an ATC request to remove a 64-year-old man from a members’ area. “The man complied and there is no further police action,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

The ATC action comes while Latham is under investigation over an incident allegedly occurring on 1 April at Rosehill Racecourse, another ATC property. He faces two charges of “improper and insulting behaviour,” to which he has pleaded not guilty. Following a Racing NSW-prompted disciplinary hearing, he received a suspended sentence from the organisation and resigned his membership.
