Man hospitalised after hotel shooting in Manunda

A man in his 40s has been taken to hospital after being shot at a Cairns hotel in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police were called to the Palm Royale Cairns on Chester Court, Manunda, following reports of a gunshot injury to the man’s leg. Emergency services transported him to Cairns Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, according to Queensland Ambulance Service.

Authorities declared an emergency zone under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) shortly after 1am while specialist officers attended the scene. Police later confirmed there was no ongoing threat to hotel guests or the wider community. The declaration was lifted about 3.45am.

A crime scene has been established as investigations continue.

The incident comes less than a week after police enacted another PSPA declaration in Cairns, when a man allegedly armed with what appeared to be a firearm barricaded himself inside a home on Brophy Street. The 31-year-old from Edge Hill was arrested and charged with attempted entry with intent to commit an indictable offence, trespass, and serious assault of a police officer.
