Eat Local, Stay Local returns with $100 vouchers for Tassie diners and travellers
Tasmanians will once again be able to enjoy a meal out or book a local getaway on the government’s tab, with the Eat Local, Stay Local scheme back in action. Nearly 60,000 vouchers worth $100 each are now available, aimed at giving hospitality and tourism operators a lift while easing the cost for families.
Tourism, Hospitality and Events Minister Jane Howlett said the scheme had proven its worth before, delivering fresh activity for small businesses and regional towns. "For every dollar spent in the state's tourism and hospitality sector, another 83 cents is generated in Tasmania's economy," she said.
Unlike previous rounds where 100,000 vouchers were up for grabs, this year’s scheme has been scaled back as part of budget repair. Registration ran for two weeks in June, with around 60,000 Tasmanians registered in June, and everyone who applied will get one.
The scheme was meant to roll out between July and October but was put on hold during the state election. just under 60,000 Tasmanians signing up.
Vouchers can be used for accommodation, experiences, or dining across cafes, bars and restaurants. Rather than paper slips, participants will be reimbursed online after submitting proof of purchase.
Not everyone is impressed. Labor’s finance spokesman Luke Edmunds called it political spin: "It's an attempt to use public money to buy public support after the biggest infrastructure stuff-up in Tasmania's history, the Spirits fiasco," he said.
Hospitality Tasmania chief executive Steve Old, however, welcomed the move. "Our industry is one of the largest employers in the state and a major driver of regional economies. Support like this is a welcome recognition of that contribution," he said, adding that each voucher meant extra trade, staff hours secured, and a stronger summer outlook.
There won’t be a second round and the remaining $4 million from the original funding will go back to Treasury.
