Woolly Bay Hotel faces scrutiny after controversial AFL party antics
An end-of-season party for the Greater Western Sydney Giants has landed a high-profile Sydney pub in hot water, with Liquor & Gaming NSW wrapping up an investigation into the venue’s handling of the event.
The Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel — now branded as the Woolly Bay — is facing possible disciplinary action after players at the September gathering engaged in offensive skits, including one involving an inflatable doll and another referencing the 9/11 attacks. The event, hosted at the eastern suburbs pub owned by hospitality heavyweight Arthur Laundy, drew swift backlash and resulted in player suspensions and fines from the AFL.
Liquor & Gaming NSW said it had reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed staff before referring two disciplinary complaints to the NSW Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority. “The investigation considered alleged indecent conduct on the premises and failure by the venue to take reasonable steps to prevent behaviour likely to encourage the misuse and abuse of alcohol,” it said.
If upheld, the complaints could lead to fines, licence conditions, or suspensions. “Liquor & Gaming NSW is committed to holding licensed venues accountable and reminds operators that serious penalties may apply for breaches of liquor laws, licence conditions or failures in the responsible service of alcohol,” the regulator added.
Laundy Hotels owns a suite of pubs across Sydney, including Northies in Cronulla and the Light Brigade in Woollahra. The $14 million refurbished Woolly Bay opened under the Laundy banner in 2022.
